The music of the 1950s and 1960s lives again on MusicMaster Online Worldwide! Hear the big hits, little hits, songs that should have been hits, songs that helped create rock and roll, and lots of other surprises.
You've overlooked the fact that it wasn't really Danny & the Juniors who sang "Do The Bop". At least they weren't up front anyway. At that time, the foursome were still called the Juvenaires. They were backing up Johnny Madara who was the one who sang lead on both of those original recordings, including "Sometimes". Madara had already established himself on Capitol's Prep label with a song called "Be My Girl", which was initially found on Artie Singer's Singular banner (#1005).
ReplyDeleteProblems arose after the "Do The Bop" to "At The Hop" solution arrived, in that Capitol didn't like the song enough to let Madara record it and release it under any title. So, Madara had to step aside and let Danny Rapp step up and take on the lead for both songs. That's when Danny & the Juniors were born.
Madara has said that it was Artie Singer who was behind the "Do The Bop" release, sometime in the early 1990's, IIRC. I remember seeing it when it came out and gave it a listen then. Because it didn't sound anything like Danny & the Juniors, I passed on it, thinking it was some modern group trying to cash in on the legacy of the song. Little did I know at the time why it didn't sound like Danny & the Juniors, because Madara was singing lead! I did eventually find a copy later on, after I learned of the true background.
As a side note, Madara was unaware of an earlier song by the Hilltoppers (on the Dot label) called "Do The Bop", with an eerily similarly titled flip side called "When You're Alone"...!

True. That's why the title was Do The Bop by The Juvenaires. Thanks for adding all this great info, Fred. Good stuff!
