Most people back then, including myself, were against the war. That did not mean we didn't love our country and respect our troops. That's the beautiful thing about America: we are free to speak out against our own government when we think they're doing something wrong. It's something worth fighting to preserve. But it was impossible to see Vietnam as a threat to America, even if you stretch the point and say that containing or destroying Communism anywhere in the world protects America. Ironically, Communist China eventually embraced Capitalism and a free market economy, albeit with full control by the central government's ruling class. The Communist economy of the USSR finally collapsed under its own weight, too, and left them forced to accept free market principals. Socialist countries all around the world, like Greece, are now teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and failure. Meanwhile, America, despite a very strong push toward Socialism by Progressives who demonize Capitalism and the free market, is still quite rich, innovative, successful and powerful. If Bob Seger were writing songs today, I'm quite sure they'd be anti-Obama protest songs, probably with a very Liberal take on social issues. That seems to be just the right direction for this country at the moment. We'd better do it quick before our skyrocketing national debt pushes us over an economic cliff.joeknapphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04850354572778044070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5674615438271745950.post-41755840368240797752015-08-15T09:05:07.900-05:002015-08-15T09:05:07.900-05:00Hi Joe, thanks for the memory jog and clips. It doesn't seem that he could flip from anti to pro war so quick, although we in the blue-collar neighborhoods had plenty of early casualty knowledge via family and friends. I am Linda Gino from the G-Notes aka the Gino Sisters, who recorded "I Would" and "Johnny, Johnny, Johnny" in 1958 and 1959, both written and produced by George Motola and Ricki Page. I was delighted to find mention of these facts in your BLOG. It still amazes me when I discover one of our recordings on YouTube or read something about our musical career, when we were children, in a BLOG on the internet. I haven't tracked down all the sources for this information, but most of it is suprisingly accurate given the fact that we didn't directly provided it! I would like to correct what I believe is a mis-quote from one of your sources, an E-mail interview with Ricki Page that appears on Black Cat Rockabilly. You wrote "One of the many songs they wrote together was Johnny Johnny Johnny for the G Notes in 1958. All vocals on that song were done by June . . ." If you read question 6 again, I think you will see that Ricki was referring to Wee Willie and Love Like A Fool, not Johnny Johnny Johnny, when she said, ". . . I did all the vocals." Nancy and I began singing together when we were 5 & 7. Our sister Colleen joined the group before her 2nd birthday. We recorded Johnny Johnny Johnny - our 4th single - in 1958 and I was 12 years old. Our association with George Motola and Ricki Page lasted 3 or 4 years. They wrote and produced our 3rd, 4th, and 5th singles, and they hired us as background singers on various sessions in our early teens. I have fond memories of working with them and with Becky and Sheila. Ricki was an excellent role model and she inspired me to begin writing songs at an early age. Best I remember, Mr. Brown was never released, although Cotton Carrier, Bill Lowery's partner, had some pressings in his files. Bob Richardson was the engineer on all the cuts we made at Mastersound Studios in Doraville, GA. The opening bass bow-bow-bow sounds on the opening of Ain't You Glad It's Summertime are made by Hugh Jarrett, who put up half the money with Bill Lowery footing the other half, to produce the record.
